It’s interesting because we attract what we give out. I’ve been meeting some amazing people/readers in the blogging world. In my last post, We All Need Friends who Motivate us, I talked about the difference one person came make on a team. Additionally, one person can impact our lives in a way that we feel like we can accomplish more. From my last post, I had a special blogger, Wendell, contact me and share his beautiful poem called “A Genuine Friend.” His poem made me think about what makes a genuine friend? He let me share it with all of you. Please visit his site if you get a chance to read some positive words from a blessed man.
A Genuine Friend by Wendell
There is a love which lives deep within
A genuine one which will never go away
No matter how one might try to release it
In our hearts and minds, we find it stays
Whenever another touches our inner being
While bringing their pleasant peace inside
We find ourselves to become comfortable
As we begin to embrace them in our lives
They may become genuine friends who care
They might become sisters and brothers too
They brighten our lives each time they speak
Changing gray skies to ones of crystal blue
The hearts of these special ones we care for
Are so genuine and selfless in every way
They are in our lives for special reasons
Making sunny our cloudy and rainy days
Whether you are a dear sister or brother
Or the truest friend one in life may find
You are a treasure to those who love you
Because of your selfless heart in they find.
Qualities of a Genuine Friend
Here are five qualities I believe make a genuine friend.
- Great listener: Genuinely cares about what you have to say.
- Will stick by your side: We will have ups and downs in our lives. A friend is by your side through thick and thin.
- Can almost finish your sentence: Knows you so well he/she can almost finish your sentence or knows what you think before you even say the words.
- Doesn’t try to change you: Accepts you for you. Knows your heart and your inner beauty even on your bad days.
- Will want the best for you: Wants you to succeed after everything you are doing in life. They are happy because you are happy.
Of course, friendship requires reciprocation. You get what you put out. Be the type of friend you want to attract.
Don’t Be too Busy to Help
Life is busy, but don’t forget to take a moment to help someone in need around you. I love this video that was recently posted by ABC News. In this race, three runners help a girl finish the race. The last guy picks her up and runs her to the finish line. He puts her on her feet so that she could cross the finish line. I love this because life can feel like a race. It’s go go go. Everything is busy. With technology, we can be constantly working. If we pause to take a moment to help someone around us who may be close to falling flat on his face, how much would it mean to that person? How many times have you gone through a rough patch in your life where you feel like you just can’t keep going? You want to fall on your knees even when the finish line is in sight? What would it mean to you if a genuine friend helped you get to that finish line?
I can’t embed the video, which is wonderful, but you can look at the runners who helped carry a fatigued runner here.
I hope I got you to think about the type of friend you are or the type of friends you want to attract. None of us are perfect, but I hope I pause in my life long enough to notice when someone may need my help. Thank you for reading!
Are there any other qualities that you believe make a great friend?

“A friend forgives your faults. A good friend doesn’t see any” someone gave me that on a plaque and it made me smile because that’s the way it should be. God bless you and thanks for putting a link to Wendell’s blog. His poems are wonderfully inspiring!

I agree with you on those things that make a friend! I’d rather have a small group of genuine friends than hundreds of people I don’t know.

Now the question is: if you have a not-so-genuine friend, how do you get rid of them in a way that’s not too upsetting for either party?
I also have really good friends, though, and they deserve all the credit for being awesome. The poem is lovely and perfectly describes true friendship 🙂

Sam, What a great point! I think if there is a “friend” or family member you have that actually brings you down, you should distance yourself. Negative energy does you no good. Over time, the relationship will slowly start to fade. You will realize that either you want him/her around more or that it is best when you communicate less with him/her. And great friends are the best.

We shall have few true friends. This is sad. I define a good friend is the person will come and get you at 2am at the bar. Take you home safe and sound. They will come and fix your water heating in the middle of the night. They will change your tire in the coldness of Winter without a complain. Loan you money and won’t accept the payment back. Will listen to you even when you wrong. I enjoyed your words and thoughts. I agree with them.
