Valentine’s: Challenge to Show Love to the Lonely

Happy Valentine’s Day! I hope everyone is enjoying this special day with someone. In the spirit of Valentine’s, the one thing that came to my mind is how is this day for those who don’t have anyone to love? Or what about a recent heartbreak or death?

Single Parents

I was a single mother in my early twenties. All of the holidays were tough. As a mother, you give, give, and give some more to your children. You eat cold food because you feed them first. You clean up snotty noses and wipe butts. Oh, and why pick up your house? Your toddler is just going to destroy it right behind you. Sometimes I think my children feed the floor more than they do their mouths. Who is there to give to you at the end of the day? No one. So that can be tough. This goes for single mothers and fathers.

Adversity

What about these people on Valentine’s?

  • Widow or widower
  • Single people in general
  • People with financial burdens
  • People in the hospital
  • Parents who have lost children

How are they spending their Valentine’s?

Valentine’s Challenge

Now, my hope is for everyone to have a wonderful Valentine’s. I challenge all of you to look outside of your immediate relationship and do something nice for one other person. It can be as little as a caramel apple (okay- I love caramel apples and chocolate covered strawberries) or some flowers. Could you imagine the smile you can bring to another person’s face and heart for doing one kind gesture around a holiday that can be tough for many? I plan to bring a caramel apple for a friend of mine who is recently separated from her spouse. I’m sure this first Valentine’s alone with her children will not be easy. I’m going to write her a note that just says, “I ❤️ U!”and “Thinking of you.”

I have another friend who lost her oldest daughter to cancer one year ago this month. I’m going to bring her a caramel apple and flowers with a nice note letting her know I’m thinking of her too.

Happy Valentine’s Day to all! ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ Be safe. Show love.

P.S. I’m going to get myself a caramel apple today. Happy Valentine’s Day to me! ❤️ 😜

    1. Thank you, Debbie! ❤ My friend who lost her child was overjoyed with the flowers and chocolate covered strawberries. The place I normally get caramel apples didn’t have them ready. My other friend who is separated from her husband was super grateful. She was teary and asked me to pray for her family. It was a great Valentine’s Day. I hope you had a wonderful Valentine’s Day! ❤

  1. That’s very thoughtful of you. 🙂
This year I’ve given the “platonic Valentine’s Day gift” of a chocolate rose to two single female friends… it actually felt like a more worthwhile thing to do than a fair few of the Valentine’s gifts I’ve given to partners over the years…(!)

Happy Valentine’s Day to you, Ipuna!
Hope you enjoy your apple. Yum. 🙂

    1. See! You did the challenge! Although, you didn’t need the challenge to do the kind gesture! You’re single friends probably loved loved loved it! So nice! My two friends were sooooo happy. Like emotional happy. It made this day more special for me.
The place I normally get my caramel apples from didn’t have them ready this morning. I got chocolate covered strawberries at the grocery store instead. They never have them. Seasonal. I got myself some. Yummy!!! I made myself happy too. Ha ha ha! I hope you had a great Valentine’s Day!

      1. I’m glad your friends were happy: mine were likewise — I even got a nice text in return. 🙂
Haha no caramel apples for me, though I indulged with some suitably decadent ice cream, which is one of of guiltiest pleasures.
Thank you for the positivity; positive vibes are something I’m appreciating more and more in 2017. 🙂

  2. Those who have not been saddened on or around a holiday don’t always realize it’s not the best of times for everyone. It is always good to be aware of those who might be going through a rough patch and can use encouragement at all times…but especially when a day is being mass-celebrated. Showing love to the lonely is such a great sentiment for today…and every day!

    1. You are so correct! Today is a day that’s tough because as you said, there is mass “love” celebration, but we should always be sensitive to those around us who may be lonely and/or facing some tough trial. Thank you for the wonderful feedback! ❤

    1. Oh, lovely! My two friends were sooooo happy. That meant the world to me. ❤️ You will feel so good when you take time to make someone else smile. You are so busy too with medical school!!! What a great sacrifice for you, but I promise it is worth it. Thank you for your kind words and support. It means a ton to me! ❤️
